We were all mounted and set to go when Lynn came up to Des to report "no fuel". There was however, a tanker at the station filling up the underground tanks, so we hoped we would be underway in an hour or so. At 10:30am we left Pozo Almonte and its friendly workmen's' hotel with the delicious roast dinner and headed for the high country through some of the most spectacular country I have ever seen. The roads were cut into the sides of the mountains, angling ever upwards. The trucks coming the other way looked like toy trucks in the distance. The road surface was excellent which meant we could take a sneak peak down into the valleys without having to worry about pot holes. Every so now and then there were signs warning us of rock slides, and although there were some rocks on the road here and there, it wasn't unmanageable. We rode constantly upwards, and then down into the valleys which had dry river beds and fords of concrete, but only very small trickles of creeks. Looking at the width of the riverbeds though, you could imagine the torrents of water that must cascade through this area in the winter <b>…</b>
